Wolfenstein 3 sounds like it might actually happen
Wolfenstein 3 may be next for developer MachineGames, which revived the Nazi-slaying first-person shooter franchise in 2014 with Wolfenstein: The New Order and recently delivered Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Speaking in an interview for the NoClip documentary on MachineGames, studio director Jerk Gustafsson offered hope for a third entry in the modern Wolfenstein saga to wrap up BJ Blazkowiscz’s adventures.
“We have always seen this as a trilogy,” Gustafsson said. “That journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we had the plan for, at least, that character: what will happen in the second one, what will happen in the third one. I think that’s important to say, because — at least, I hope — we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”
The previous game in the planned trilogy, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, was released in 2017. In the intervening years, MachineGames has developed (or co-developed) DLC side stories and franchise spinoffs, like Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, which are led by protagonists who are not BJ.
MachineGames has also been busy with other id properties in recent years, developing or co-developing new content for reissues of classic games like Doom, Quake, and Quake 2. Working on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (and its recently released DLC), also occupied a few years of the studio’s time, but hopefully it’s now freed up to get back to Wolfenstein, so we can see what’s up with Mr. and Mrs. Blazkowiscz.
After all, “the story of killing Nazis is evergreen” — as we were recently reminded when Amazon MGM Studios and Bethesda Softworks announced they were developing a Wolfenstein TV series for Prime Video. That show will be overseen by Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville, who will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series for Kilter Films, which executive produced Amazon’s Fallout show.
