DC’s Superman and Batman sequels get some very welcome updates
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has confirmed Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel will begin filming this spring for an Oct. 1, 2027 theatrical release, and that “James Gunn is already preparing to write the next installment in the Super family.” The word comes from a WBD letter to shareholders, which also praises the success of Gunn’s David Corenswet-led Superman film, which has grossed $560 million worldwide.
“In film, James Gunn is busy preparing the next installments of the DC super family, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026), Clayface (2026) and the next Wonder Woman. In addition, The Batman II (2027) is preparing to begin shooting next spring, among several other projects in development. The 10-year vision for the DC universe also includes an exciting array of television projects, including The Penguin, the upcoming new season of ‘Peacemaker,’ and the debut of ‘Lanterns’ in 2026,” Zaslav said in a letter to WBD shareholders, as reported by Deadline. “In a precise and measured way, the DC franchise will increasingly overlay across the studio’s broader efforts: from film and TV to consumer products, games, experiences and social.”
The Batman Part 2 has officially entered pre-production, according to Production List, where Robert Pattinson is set to reprise his role as the Caped Crusader alongside Colin Farrell’s The Penguin from the original film. The film was initially slated for release in 2025, but was delayed several times as Reeves confirmed he was still working on the script. Since then, the script has been completed, with Gunn confirming earlier in July he had Reeves’ The Batman Part 2 script and it was “great.”
Next up in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU is Peacemaker season 2, which will bring back a few characters from Superman — namely Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Maxwell Lord — and Supergirl, which used to be called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and will introduce Lobo.
